Stephen Giannetti,
painter and sculptor.
Working from his studio in Davis, California — a thirty-year practice in the grid, the circle, and the language of color.

Born in Northern California, Stephen Giannetti has been creating art most of his life. Over a thirty-year career, Stephen has explored the grid and the circle across painting, drawing, and sculpture.
Early in his career, he pioneered a new mode of approaching the modernist grid. By painting three primary and three secondary colors in a specific pattern to define a set of same-sized circles, Stephen sought to create an engaging visual experience where the act of seeing color is primary. For the past fifteen years, he has adapted his method of hand-painting with traditional oil to the more contemporary application of acrylic spray paint. Using poker chips as a stencil for layering spray paint, he creates an active space where colors mix and shapes fade in and out of view. During the pandemic, Stephen began using poker chips as the building blocks of sculptural forms.
I want to paint a fractured space that is conceived by its process — a contemporary, incremental, and measured accumulation of authentic mark-making. My paintings consist of eight layers, each a binary grid of same-sized circles. Predetermined color sequences are assigned to specific circles and woven together through the layering. Spatial effects as visual documentation of the painting's process. The circle enjoys references to the cell, the Ben-Day dot, and the pixel. Think: Pointillism under magnification.
